Episode 11: Joyeux Noël & Turkey Illness
Iaorana! H'churu?
Today is my 3rd month mark on the mission. Which is just crazy to me hahaha. Time goes by so insanely fast!
We had a really good lesson with our friend Matai. Matai is a funny guy, he wears a green beanie to every lesson, loves to talk about America, and knows his stuff about the Bible (but never in a bashing way). We've been teaching him since we started in Mataiea, and hes great, but he's not been super great in doing our invitations, like reading the Book of Mormon. So going into this week's lesson, my comp and I weren't really sure what to expect/do in general, because we can only keep teaching someone for so long if they aren't trying to do their part with invitations. But anyways, we start the lesson, we're going through the rétablissement (restoration) and we hit the Joseph Smith portion. My companion talks about how the Book of Mormon was translated by Joseph Smith, how old he was (not very), and how it was translated in 90 days. Matai just goes "what??? 90 days?!? It took the Bible like 6 generations.. wow, that's a miracle!" He was really attentive and seemed a lot more interested in what we had to say. Hopefully next lesson he'll have read some of the Book of Mormon and we can continue to make progress with him!
I also got sick this week. Woooo! I think it was some turkey that did me in. Every time I get sick, even in America, I kinda freak out and think something along the lines of "this is surely the end for me. I am dying and I know it. There is no way anything else could be happening to me" hahaha. I may be a bit of a hypochondriac. Anyways! Spending a day bedridden (or at least confined to being horizontal) made me realize how grateful I am for each day on this mission where I'm able to really physically work hard. The tahitian sun may be brutal, the food may be sketchy sometimes, but it's a blessing to be out here working hard and showing the Lord the effort we're willing to give to find those He's prepared.
For a quick count of some other things we did this week, the list is as follows:
- discovered that touching/putting your feet in the water is now legal for our mission (we all freaked out)
- made like 100 cookies. We didn't have mixing bowls so we mixed everything in ice cream tubs in true tahitian fashion
- caught 2 baby geckos
- cracked open a bottle of martinellis with our bishop
But anyways, JOYEUX NOEL! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas day and season. It's kinda interesting to be somewhere tropical on Christmas but ours was still awesome! We had a great church service (miracle alert: matai came!!), had lunch with our bishop, and visited our friend Olivier with the other soeurs to sing Christmas hymns for him. It was a really lovely day! I'm super grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the birth of Christ as a missionary, because I love talking about His birth, sacrifice, ministry, and gospel. Even if I don't know how to say some of it in french, the language of the spirit is always the same. Alors encore, joyeux Noël à tout!
So yeah, not a bunch to report on this week, mostly cause I was sick for half of it hahaha. But that's all for now, I hope you all have a wonderful week! Faaitoito!
